Feeling overwhelmed by your children’s toys? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. I’ve put together some of my favorite playroom storage ideas to help you get the mess organized and under control.
Let’s get started.
Organizing a playroom takes time, especially if your kids have a ton of toys. My best advice, do not attempt this while the kids are awake. One night when they are in bed, grab yourself a glass of wine or an ice cold beer and go to town. Attempting to organize a toy room with your children is a near impossible task.
Let’s talk Storage.
It’s important that children can see what they have, otherwise “it’s out of site, out of mind”, and honestly at that point you may as well just donate them. I’ve learned the best way to store toys is in labeled bins and clear buckets. Not only does it keep things looking neat, it also makes for easier clean up.
Ditch the boxes and containers.
So many toys come in boxes or containers that take up too much space. Take Lincoln logs for example. They come in this large tin. It’s awkward and is full of empty space. One shoebox sized containers is large enough to fit all the pieces and it saves so much valuable space!
Another great way to save space, is ditch the puzzle boxes. Store puzzle pieces in ziplock bags. Take it to the next step and cut out the small image on the side of the box to put inside for reference when assembling.
Think outside the box!
Just because it isn’t labeled as “playroom storage” doesn’t mean it can’t be used in a playroom. Below are two of my favorite playroom storage ideas using items meant for things other than toys.
This two tier wire mesh shoe organizer from target has become what we like to call, “the parking garage” The shelves are adjustable and give these giant trucks a home rather than letting them sprawl across the floor. Clean up is made easy too by encouraging my son to “park” his trucks rather then “clean up” his trucks
My other favorite “not meant for toys” playroom storage idea, is this thread organizer that stores all of the hot wheels and matchbox cars. I could imagine these would also be great to store barbie doll accessories and other small toys like LOL dolls and shopkins.
Finding better play room storage solutions has really helped take away the stress of the mess. Adults aren’t the only ones who feel overwhelmed when the playroom is a mess. My boys play so much longer when they are not inundated with an overflow of toys. Cleaning up the playroom after a long day is the last thing any parent wants to do, but having simple storage solutions makes the clean up process easier, not just for us, but for the kids too.

Why have I never thought of using a shelf like this for all my boys trucks?!? Genius!
